WitchCraft in General
This page is for people who don't know a lot or anything about this alternate religion (Note: Print this page out and give to people who dont quite understand your chosen path). First of all it is a real, honest to Goddess, bonafide religion. It is NOT some new age cult. It's kind of funny, because it is called "new age", but it is much older than most religions (I'm not sure if it is older than Shamanism and other like religions).
First of all, I'm sure you're asking "What is witchCraft?" Well, I'll tell you. WitchCraft is a nture-based, dual deity worshiping (thats right, no athiesm here) religion. Worshiping, however, takes on a whole new meaning. To us, worship meand respect and reverence, not fear.
Lets get some things straight: We don't do sacriices (human or animal),put curses on people or do drugs. All of the above go againdt this religion. Also, when people think of witches, real witches, not the ones on TV, they think of public sex and lots of other sexual things. That is not true. I will tell you what lead to that belief. Some Solitaries (Witches who work alone)and some covens as well prefer to work skyclad, or naked. This never happens with minors in the group, though. This is also, however, a personal choice, and one that is practiced by very few Pagans today. Most Witches prefer to wear Ritual Clothes: from not too out of the ordinary to way out there, they all have the same purpose: Something special to wear to put you in that frame of mind. Now, as for ritual sex, I can't deny that that never happens, BUT (and this is a BIG but) it only happens in prvate between 2 conseting ADULTS, usually husband and wife. Different Traditions
Ther are all kinds of traditions in WitchCraft, just like there are all many different types of Christianity. Here are a frw of the Traditions. This information I got from Silver RavenWolf's book, To Ride A Silver Broomstick. If you would like my complete list, e-mail me!
Alexandrian: Founded in England during the 1960's,Alex Sanders referred to himself as the "King" of his Witches. The rituals are said to be modified Gardenarian.
British Traditional Witch: A mix of Celtic and Gardenarian beliefs. Most famous orgaanization at this time is the International Red Garters. British Traditionals move mostly from within the Farrar studies (the famous Witch husband and wife from England.) They too are fairly structured in their beliefs, and train through the degree process. Their covens are also co-ed
Celtic Wicca: The use of a Celtic/Druidic pantheon mixed with a little ritual Gardnerian, and heavily stressing the elements, nature, and the Ancient Ones. They had a vast knowledge of and respect for the healing and magickal qualities of plants and stones, flowes, trees, elemental spirits, the little people, gnomes, and fairies.
Caledonii Tradition: Formally known as the Hecatine Tradition, this denomination of the Craft is Scottish in origin, and still preserves the unique festivals of the Scots.
